Shelter Island sits between the North and South Forks and is reached only by ferry — a short, pretty crossing, but worth planning around.

Getting here

By air: Easiest is to fly into JFK. Newark or LGA also work — figure on about a 2.5 hour drive to East Hampton.
By train: From JFK, take the LIRR to East Hampton. The fall schedule isn't out yet, but there are usually 4–5 trains a day and it's about 2.5 hours once you're on.
By car: Renting a car from JFK is about a 2 hour drive.
Onto Shelter Island: The island is reached only by ferry: the South Ferry from North Haven (Sag Harbor) is about a 5 minute crossing, or the North Ferry from Greenport on the North Fork.

Also on the island: The Chequit and Sunset Beach are both a short drive from The Pridwin, plus a handful of rentals in the Heights.

Sag Harbor: Sag Harbor Inn and Faraway.
East Hampton & Wainscott: The Sagaponack, The Hedges Inn, LDV at the Maidstone, The Baker House 1650, and 1770 House.
Good to know: Sag Harbor and East Hampton are the easiest base for Friday's distillery party — about 20 minutes plus the ferry back to Shelter Island.

Cars & taxis: Car service on the island is limited on weekends — book rides in advance and plan for ferry timing on both nights.
Ferries: The South and North Ferries run frequently until late; check the last crossing before you head out for the evening.
